Agios Nikolaos in Chania, Eastern Orthodox church in Splantzia Square, Greece

Agios Nikolaos is an Orthodox church in the Splantzia area featuring both a distinctive minaret and a church dome. The building displays vaulted arcades along its northern side near Vourdouba Street, where the layered architecture from different periods becomes evident.

The structure was built in 1320 as a Dominican monastery and converted into a mosque in 1645 during Ottoman rule of Crete. This transformation reflects the shifting political control of the island across centuries.

The structure displays layers of different religious uses, having served as a Catholic cathedral, then a mosque, and finally an Orthodox church. The mixed architectural styles visible today reflect the many communities that shaped this place over time.

The church complex is open daily for visitors to observe the architectural features from different eras. The restored minaret is visible from various angles around the square, making it easy to appreciate the structure from multiple viewpoints.

The minaret features two balconies on its southwestern corner, a distinctive detail rarely seen in Greek architecture. This striking feature emerged during the building's transformation and stands as a visible reminder of cultural layering.
