The Workshop, Bookshop in the 20th arrondissement, Paris, France
L'Atelier is an independent bookshop on Rue du Jourdain in the 20th arrondissement of Paris, open since 1993. It operates across three separate spaces in the neighborhood: the main shop for literature and essays, L'Atelier d'en face for comics and children's books, and L'Atelier d'à côté for art books and illustrated works.
The bookshop opened in 1993 in the Belleville neighborhood and has since become a steady part of local life. Over the years it expanded to two more nearby spaces, each devoted to a different area of publishing.
L'Atelier is woven into the daily life of the neighborhood, drawing regular locals alongside curious visitors. The main shop focuses on literature, poetry, and essays, while a separate space across the street carries comics and books for younger readers.
The three spaces are all close together on Rue du Jourdain, so visiting all three on foot is straightforward. It is worth setting aside time for each one, since the selection in every space is different.
The current owner, Georges-Marc, has been running the shop for about ten years and personally oversaw its expansion into three spaces. L'Atelier d'à côté, the art book space, tends to be the quietest of the three and draws people who are interested in design and illustration rather than text-heavy reading.
