Chéri-Chérie, Bakery and café in the 20th arrondissement, Paris
Chéri-Chérie is a bakery and café in the 20th arrondissement of Paris, also known as a spot for proposals. The space is simply decorated and features freshly baked bread, pastries, and sandwiches made on-site each day.
The café was opened by a couple with deep roots in the area: David grew up nearby and spent time as a child in an old bistro called Chez Madeleine that once stood on this site. Together with Amandine, who studied architecture and comes from Burgundy, they turned a place from his childhood into something of their own.
The name Chéri-Chérie is a tender French term of endearment, roughly meaning "darling" or "sweetheart". The place has built a reputation in the neighborhood as a spot for proposals and small celebrations.
Coming in the morning is a good idea, as the fresh bread is out of the oven early and the place tends to be less crowded. Later in the afternoon it can fill up, though the overall pace stays unhurried.
David, one of the founders, used to play pinball as a child in the old bistro that once occupied this exact spot before Chéri-Chérie opened. The place where he grew up playing games is now the same place where he works and welcomes guests every day.
