Réservoir de Ménilmontant, Water tank in Ménilmontant district, Paris, France.
The Depósito de Ménilmontant is a water reservoir located in the Ménilmontant neighborhood of Paris, built to supply water to the northern and northwestern sections of the city. The facility was constructed at one of the highest points in the district to ensure effective water distribution throughout the urban area.
Engineer Eugène Belgrand built this first water storage facility within Paris in 1865. This construction marked a turning point in the city's modern water supply system.
The reservoir represents a fundamental component of Paris water management system, alongside four other major tanks distributed throughout the capital.
Water arrives at the facility through aqueducts and pumping stations from the Seine near Ivry and the Marne near Joinville-le-Pont. Visitors can view the structure from outside, with the best perspective available from the surrounding neighborhood streets.
The facility stores roughly 95 million liters of water and contributes a significant share to daily water supply for Paris households. Its elevated location on a hill was a deliberate design choice to allow gravity to naturally circulate water throughout the city.
