Chocolaterie of Monaco, Chocolate shop and delicatessen in Monaco
The Chocolaterie de Monaco is a small chocolate shop and delicatessen on the Place de la Visitation, near the Prince's Palace. Inside, handmade truffles, pralines, and chocolate bars share space with a few small tables where visitors can sit down for a hot chocolate or a pastry.
The shop was founded in the early 1920s by Pierre Maurin, an engineer who carried forward a dream he had shared with his friend François Riquier, a chocolate-maker killed in action in 1918. Over the decades, the business built a close connection with the princely family.
The Chocolaterie de Monaco is an official supplier to the princely court, a status that shapes part of its product range. Some chocolates are shaped like small crowns, nodding to Monaco's royal history.
The shop sits on the Place de la Visitation, a small square in the old town that is easy to reach on foot from the Prince's Palace or the Oceanographic Museum. There are tables inside, so it is possible to sit down and try something even in bad weather.
The Italian-style hot chocolate served here is notably thick, closer to a pudding than a drink, and is often paired with a small piece of cake. Pierre Maurin once described chocolate-making as a secret art in which the choice of ingredients matters as much as the skill of the hands.
