Gorges du Fier

The Gorges du Fier is a limestone canyon carved by the Fier River, with steep rock walls rising on both sides. A metal walkway is anchored directly into the cliff face, allowing visitors to walk through the narrow passage between the towering rock formations.

The canyon was shaped over millions of years as the Fier River slowly cut through limestone layers, carving out the deep vertical walls visible today. This natural formation demonstrates how persistent water flow gradually reshapes solid rock into dramatic geological features.

Local legends tell stories of ancient settlements near the gorge, where inhabitants used the natural fortress-like walls for protection during medieval times.

Visitors walk on a narrow metal walkway that clings to the rock walls, requiring careful footing throughout the route. The pathway is suitable for most people in reasonable physical condition, though those uncomfortable with heights may find it challenging.

The metal walkway was built in the early 1900s and ranks among the first of its kind in the French Alps. This engineering solution allowed people to follow the river's course without cutting stairs or tunnels into the rock.
