Sauschwänzlebahn, Heritage railway in Blumberg, Germany.
Sauschwänzlebahn is a narrow-gauge railway extending from Blumberg-Zollhaus to Weizen through Black Forest landscape, crossing four bridges and passing through six tunnels. The route winds through forested areas with views of the surrounding nature.
The railway was built between 1890 and 1892 to transport supplies around the Black Forest region following Germany's annexation of Alsace-Lorraine. This strategic line played an important role for military purposes of that era.
The railway is operated by dedicated enthusiasts who care for the locomotives and tracks while sharing how transport once worked in the region. Visitors can learn about local transportation history during their journeys here.
The ride is steep in places and requires good footwear, especially if you plan to exit and explore the surroundings. It is wise to wear comfortable clothing and prepare for changeable weather conditions.
The route contains Germany's only spiral tunnel, where the railway loops to gain elevation. Because of this special design, much more track is needed to cover the same straight-line distance.
