Burg Blumegg, Medieval castle in Stühlingen, Germany
Burg Blumegg is a castle standing on an isolated limestone needle at the edge of cliffs above Wutach Gorge, roughly 630 meters above sea level. The remaining stone structures sit on a steep rocky outcrop that visitors can reach through marked trails from the town of Stühlingen.
The structure was first documented in 1292 when someone named Heinricus in Blumenegge appeared in records. It transformed from a functioning castle into ruins between 1417 and 1420.
The nearby rock formation known as Lunzistein or Brautfelsen carries stories from local tradition that visitors still hear from people in the area. These tales give the site meaning beyond its physical stones.
The site is reachable on foot from Stühlingen through clearly marked trails, though the climb becomes steep. Wear sturdy shoes and be ready for changing weather conditions at this elevation.
The castle sits on a natural rock needle, a geological formation known locally, that is a rare landscape feature in this region. This unusual position provided occupants with defense while also making the place a distinctive landmark visible from far away.
