Barragem de Vilarinho das Furnas

The Vilarinho das Furnas Dam is a water dam in Campo do Gerês that holds back a large reservoir across the valley. The structure controls river flow and serves hydroelectric power generation for the region.

The dam was constructed in the mid-20th century to harness the hydroelectric potential of the region. It represents a significant step in the industrial development of northern Portugal.

The best way to view the dam is from walking paths and vantage points around the structure that offer clear sightlines of the water and the barrier itself. Access is on foot, so wear sturdy shoes and prepare for variable weather in the mountains.

Submerged beneath the reservoir is an old village that was flooded when the dam was completed. When water levels drop, remains of this vanished settlement sometimes become visible.
