Lagoa de Santo André, Lagoon in Santo André Nature Reserve, Portugal.

Lagoa de Santo André is a large shallow body of water on the Portuguese coast surrounded by sandy ridges and reed-filled banks. The landscape shows a mix of open water, marsh, and planted areas where fish and birds move freely through different habitats.

This body of water formed over thousands of years as sand and sediment shifted from the ocean, creating a natural barrier. That separation from the sea produced a space where different water conditions developed and shaped what we see today.

Fishing families in the area have developed their own ways of working with this landscape for generations. You can still see these traditions in how people interact with the water and maintain their connection to this place.

Walking is the best way to explore the area, with paths available that lead through different sections and offer various viewpoints. Wear sturdy shoes since some routes cross wet ground or sandy terrain.

This place draws birdwatchers from around the world because of an exceptionally large population of a specific reed-dwelling bird species. The conditions here create an important gathering place for this bird.
