Lagoa de Santo André

Lagoa de Santo André covers approximately 500 hectares and represents the largest coastal lagoon in Alentejo, surrounded by sand dunes, marshlands, and reed beds that support diverse wildlife populations.

This wetland ecosystem developed over thousands of years through natural sedimentation processes and the formation of sand barriers that separate freshwater from Atlantic Ocean influences.

Local communities have traditionally relied on the lagoon for artisanal fishing and small-scale aquaculture, integrating these ancestral practices into their rural lifestyle for centuries.

Visitors can access the reserve through multiple entry points, including the Monte do Paio Interpretation Center which offers guided tours and marked hiking trails throughout the protected area.

The lagoon hosts over 240 bird species, including an exceptional population of Eurasian reed warblers that exceeds numbers found at any other Portuguese site.
