Guédelon
Description
Guédelon is a theme park near Treigny where a medieval castle is being constructed using historical methods and materials. Visitors watch craftspeople actively building different sections of the fortress using techniques from the 13th century.
History
The project started in the 1990s as an experiment to understand how medieval people built castles using only period tools and methods. What began as a research initiative has become a working construction site open to visitors.
Practical
The site is open for walking around and viewing different construction areas where craftspeople demonstrate their work up close. Wear sturdy footwear as the ground is uneven and muddy conditions are common, especially after rain.
Did you know?
All materials for the castle are sourced directly from the property, including stone from an on-site quarry and timber from local forests, replicating exactly how medieval builders would have gathered their supplies. This self-sufficiency approach makes the entire effort a genuine reconstruction of medieval building conditions.
