Duhner Watt
Duhner Watt is a large tidal flat along the North Sea coast in Niedersachsen where wide mudflats and shallow waters are exposed at low tide. The landscape consists of soft ground, shallow water channels, and open sky that transform daily as the tides rise and fall.
The mudflat area has been shaped by the sea for thousands of years, creating a dynamic ecosystem in constant change. The region has a long history of fishing and coastal settlement, with people adapting to tidal rhythms for centuries.
The name comes from the village of Duhnen and the Low German word 'Watt' meaning mudflat. Today it is a place where locals and visitors walk through the flat landscape, experiencing the daily rhythm of tides and observing the creatures that live here.
It is best to wear waterproof boots as the ground is soft and muddy, especially at low tide. Visiting with a guide or group is advisable since the area is large and the tide can quickly cover the land.
The area is known for Wattwandern, specialized walks where visitors walk across the seafloor and discover creatures like lugworms and cockles living beneath. These hands-on experiences reveal the hidden world living under the mudflat.
