Lago di Castel San Vincenzo

Lago di Castel San Vincenzo, Artificial lake in Molise, Italy.

This artificial lake sits at the foot of the Mainarde mountains, featuring turquoise waters that reach a maximum depth of about 10 meters and cover approximately 0.6 square kilometers.

The lake was constructed during the 1950s as a hydroelectric reservoir, built by damming the Volturno river and surrounding mountain streams to generate renewable energy for the region.

Located within the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, the lake serves as the only swimmable artificial lake in Molise, attracting families and nature enthusiasts throughout the summer months.

Visitors can enjoy camping facilities along the shores, rent canoes and pedal boats, and explore nearby hiking trails that connect to the Volturno waterfalls and ancient abbey ruins.

The lake offers suspended tree tent camping experiences and features water colors that resemble tropical seas, creating an unusual contrast with the surrounding snow-capped mountain landscape in winter.
