Portugal's first tourist-dedicated cable car began operations on March 11, 1995, constructed by French company Pomagalski to provide modern access to the historic Penha Sanctuary and surrounding recreational areas.
The cable car connects visitors to the Penha Sanctuary dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Penha, facilitating access to religious festivals, pilgrimages, and cultural celebrations held throughout the year.
Operating Monday and Wednesday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 6:15 PM, and weekends until 7:15 PM, adult tickets cost €3.50 one-way with discounts available for children and combined transport packages.
Special hybrid cabins accommodate three passengers alongside three bicycles, allowing mountain bikers to ride up and cycle down the trails while other visitors enjoy panoramic views of medieval Guimarães below.
