Ochiai village has a long history of mountain farming, and many of its buildings date back to early modern Japan. This heritage led to the area being designated as a national Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings.
From the platform, visitors can clearly see the terraced fields that farmers still work today using traditional techniques. Kaya grass is spread over the soil to hold it in place on the steep slopes.
The platform is most rewarding to visit in the early morning or late afternoon, when the light falls softly across the slopes. The village itself can be explored on foot along old stone paths, though the terrain is steep and sturdy footwear is a good idea.
The millet known locally as Yatsumata, or finger millet, has been grown in these mountains for centuries and is now valued for its high nutritional content. In autumn, the harvested fields are visible from the platform, showing a crop that few places in Japan still cultivate.
