Iya Valley, Mountain valley in Miyoshi, Japan
Iya Valley is a deep river gorge in western Tokushima with steep mountain slopes and rocky formations that drop toward the Iya River below. Traditional wooden buildings and small settlements are scattered along the waterway and across the hillsides.
In the late 12th century, members of the Taira Clan sought refuge in the valley after their defeat in the Gempei War. This connection shaped the isolated region and continues to be part of its identity.
Local people maintain three traditional vine bridges that visitors can still cross, connecting isolated areas and reflecting how the community has adapted to this remote landscape.
You can reach the valley by taking a local bus from Oboke Station, with hiking trails and lodging scattered throughout the area. Plan ahead since it is remote and services are not equally available everywhere.
A resort features a cable car that drops into the gorge, allowing guests to bathe in riverside hot springs surrounded by sheer rock walls. This setup gives visitors access to parts of the valley otherwise difficult to reach.
