Ryuo Falls

Ryuo Falls is a waterfall within Kajigamori Natural Park that plunges down a 20-meter rock face surrounded by dense forest vegetation. The cascade forms white streams of water that gather in the gorge before flowing into the Yukawa River below.

During the eighth century, the waterfall served as a meditation site for the Buddhist monk Kukai in his early spiritual development. This connection links the location to one of Japan's most influential religious figures.

The name translates to Dragon King Falls in Japanese, reflecting the traditional beliefs about water deities dwelling in natural formations.

The drive takes about 50 minutes from the nearest highway exit, after which a 10-minute walk leads from the parking area to the waterfall. The path is straightforward to follow and trails are well maintained during the main season.

During winter months, the falling water freezes completely and transforms the waterfall into a natural ice sculpture. This frozen formation creates a rare sight that only winter visitors can witness.
