鳴子峡, Scenic viewpoint and natural gorge in Osaki, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan

Naruko Gorge is a deep canyon in the northern part of Osaki city, Miyagi Prefecture, carved by the Ōtani River over a long period of time. Its pale rock walls drop steeply on both sides, and walking trails run along the rim, offering views of the cliffs and the river far below.

The Ōtani River gradually cut through the volcanic rock of the region over thousands of years, shaping the steep walls visible today. The area was later designated as a scenic spot by Miyagi Prefecture and included within the bounds of Kurikoma National Park.

In autumn, the maple trees along the canyon walls turn red and gold, drawing visitors from across the region to the lookout points. The large arched bridge above the gorge is a favorite spot for photographers, who frame the colored leaves against the pale rock faces below.

The short rim trail is closed in winter due to snow and ice, while the longer circular trail around the surrounding forest stays open through most of the year. Visitors arriving by train can get off at Naruko-Onsen Station and take a short taxi ride or, during the autumn leaf season, a dedicated seasonal bus to the gorge.

From the large arched bridge above the gorge, visitors sometimes catch a train emerging from one of the tunnels cut into the cliff below, a combination rarely seen from a single vantage point. This view is only possible from the bridge itself and cannot be seen from the other trails.
