Naruko Park, Public park in Tohoku Region, Japan
Naruko Park is a public green space in Japan's Tohoku Region featuring walking trails, overlooks, and recreational zones near the Naruko Onsen hot spring town. The grounds spread across natural terrain with several distinct areas designed for different activities.
The grounds connect to the ancient Naruko hot springs, which were discovered after volcanic activity in 837 exposed natural thermal waters. This eruption shaped the region's development and brought people to settle nearby.
The park sits beside the Naruko Onsen hot spring town and lets visitors experience local crafts like painting kokeshi wooden dolls. You can see traditional Japanese design elements woven throughout the grounds.
You can reach the park from Nakayamadaira Onsen Station, which connects to Sendai via regular trains on the JR Rikuu-to Line. Wear comfortable walking shoes and check trail conditions, as they can vary with the season.
Viewing platforms here overlook Naruko Gorge, and in October the trees turn red and gold, painting the landscape in warm colors. Few visitors realize the gorge took millions of years to form from water cutting through the mountains.
