Iwadeyama Castle, Japanese castle in Iwadeyama, Japan
Iwadeyama is a castle site in Miyagi Prefecture built on high ground with defensive features. The remains include earthen ramparts, dry moats, and gate positions that shaped the original layout.
The Ujie clan built the fortress between 1394 and 1428 on the hilltop. Date Masamune lived here for twelve years before moving to Sendai and founding his new seat of power there.
The castle grounds contain the Yubishikan, an educational institution from the Edo period that preserved samurai traditions and martial training methods.
The ruins are about a fifteen-minute walk from Iwadeyama Station on the JR Rikuu East Line. Visitors driving can reach the site in around twenty minutes from the Furukawa interchange.
A concrete statue of Date Masamune stands in the western bailey and replaces the prewar bronze figure. The original statue was melted down during World War II when metal was collected for war production.
