Latvian Academy of Sciences Observation deck, Observation deck in Riga, Latvia.
The Latvian Academy of Sciences Observation Deck sits on the 17th floor of the building and provides a full 360-degree panorama of Riga from about 65 meters high. From this height you can see the entire city layout in every direction, from the riverbanks to the outer neighborhoods.
The building was completed in 1961 during Soviet times as a symbol of modernization with Socialist Classical architecture. After Soviet rule ended it became home to a scientific institution representing independent Latvia.
The structure represents Latvia's complex history through its transformation from a Soviet showcase to an independent nation's scientific institution, reflecting political and cultural changes over decades.
An elevator takes you to the 15th floor, after which you climb a short staircase to reach the deck. Plan about 30 minutes to an hour for your visit, especially if you want to enjoy the view in good weather.
From this point you see the distinctive curve of the Daugava River and can recognize the historical Zeppelin hangars of the Central Market from above. This perspective shows the city layout in ways impossible from street level.
