Buyongdae Cliff, Scenic cliff in Andong, South Korea

Buyongdae Cliff is a natural rock promontory at the southern edge of the Taebaek Mountain Range, overlooking Hahoe Village and the Nakdonggang River in Andong, South Korea. The cliff drops steeply on one side, and from the top the traditional rooftops of the village below are visible alongside the river as it curves through the flat land.

Before it was called Buyongdae, the cliff was known as Bukae, meaning "northern cliff" in Korean, a name that simply described its position on the north side of Hahoe Village. The current name came later and reflects the poetic renaming tradition common in the Joseon period, when scholars gave natural landmarks literary names.

The name "Buyong" is the Chinese word for lotus flower, borrowed from an old name for Hahoe Village below. This poetic reference contrasts with the rough surface of the rock and gives the site a gentle identity that locals still associate with it today.

The cliff is freely accessible at any time, and the path to the top is short and clearly marked. Clear days offer the best visibility over Hahoe Village and the river, and early morning light tends to make the scene particularly pleasant.

Buyongdae Cliff gained wider recognition after appearing in a popular Korean reality show called "I Am Solo," where participants sat on mats by the river with the cliff as a backdrop. Since then, many fans visit specifically to recreate that scene.
