Andong

Andong is a provincial city in North Gyeongsang, situated in a valley surrounded by mountain ranges and crossed by rivers. The city spreads across rolling terrain, combining modern neighborhoods with traditional village areas that feature historical buildings.

The settlement was founded during the Three Kingdoms period, with its current name assigned centuries later under the Goryeo dynasty. Over time, it developed into a significant regional center with lasting administrative importance.

The Hahoe Folk Village preserves traditional Korean homes and study halls that reflect how people lived during the Joseon period. Walking through the village, you can see how the arrangement of houses and courtyards reveals the social order and family structures of that era.

The city is easily accessible and offers various lodging and dining options at different price levels. The best time to visit is September when the folk festival takes place, though the region is worth exploring year-round.

A royal visit in 1999 brought international attention to the region and led to special cultural exhibitions. This episode is documented in local museums and shows how the city's traditional culture gained worldwide recognition.
