Bongjeongsa, Buddhist temple in Andong, South Korea

Bongjeongsa is a Buddhist temple located on the slopes of Mount Cheondeung near Andong, with multiple buildings arranged across the wooded terrain. The structures include prayer halls, residential quarters for monks, and ancillary buildings that follow traditional Korean architectural designs and materials.

The temple was established in 672 during the Silla kingdom and underwent major reconstruction in the 1300s that shaped much of its current form. Renovations in later centuries maintained the complex while preserving its original architectural character.

The temple serves as a living center for Seon Buddhist practice, where monks maintain their meditation routines and visitors can experience the quiet rhythm of monastic life. The daily rituals and ceremonies create a space where traditional Buddhist culture remains active and visible to those who visit.

The temple is easily reached by bus from Andong city, and accommodations are available on-site for visitors who want to stay longer. Wearing comfortable walking shoes is practical since the terrain is hilly and some pathways are unpaved.

The Geungnakjeon hall is one of Korea's oldest surviving wooden structures and showcases design elements from ancient Korean building traditions. This historic space allows visitors to see the craftsmanship and construction methods from centuries past.
