North Gyeongsang, Administrative province in eastern South Korea
North Gyeongsang is an administrative province in eastern South Korea that stretches between the Taebaek Mountains in the east and the Sobaek Mountains in the west. The province includes numerous cities and rural areas, among them Gyeongju with its historical sites and Pohang as a center of the steel industry.
The Silla Kingdom had its seat in this region and left behind temples, tombs, and pagodas that can still be seen today in the city of Gyeongju. After the fall of Silla, the area was incorporated into larger provinces and took its current form under modern administrative divisions.
Andong preserves traditions of Confucian scholarship that remain visible today in village academies and the wooden houses of old clans. The mask dances of this city draw visitors each year who can watch simple wooden stages and costumes made from painted paper.
Travelers can reach the province easily from Seoul or Busan, as high-speed trains and regional buses connect several cities. Those who wish to visit rural valleys or remote temple complexes should consider local bus lines or a rental car.
The apple orchards in the valleys benefit from cool nights and sunny days, which allow the fruit to develop its bright red color and sweet flavor. Visitors can join harvest activities in autumn and taste fresh apples straight from the trees.
