Seokguram Grotto and Bulguksa Temple, Buddhist temple complex on Tohamsan Mountain, Gyeongju, South Korea

Seokguram Grotto and Bulguksa Temple form a religious complex on Tohamsan Mountain near Gyeongju. The grotto houses a stone Buddha statue surrounded by smaller figures within a domed chamber, while the temple features multiple pagodas, bridges, and hall buildings scattered across the hillside.

The temple arose in the mid-8th century as an expression of faith and craftsmanship during the Silla Dynasty. Following significant destruction from external conflicts in the late 16th century, the temple was gradually renewed over the following generations.

The temple complex demonstrates Buddhist traditions through its stone pagodas and wooden buildings that continue to serve as places of worship for visitors today. The layout reflects religious practices that have been maintained in these mountains for centuries.

Visitors reach the site from Gyeongju using public transportation, with an uphill walk required to reach the grotto. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the path is steep and involves navigating uneven stone surfaces near the grotto entrance.

The grotto was assembled from individual stone blocks connected without mortar or adhesive, displaying remarkable durability. Its construction reflects the mathematical understanding of earlier generations, who used precisely calculated arches and proportions.
