Yangdong Folk Village, Traditional village in North Gyeongsang, South Korea
Yangdong Folk Village is a settlement with more than 160 traditional houses scattered across 91 hectares of forested terrain in the countryside. The structures sit among trees and near streams, with mountains surrounding the entire area on all sides.
The village was established in the 15th century and grew into a thriving settlement during the Joseon Dynasty period. A total of 54 houses remain standing that are more than 200 years old.
The village layout shows the social order of its time, with wealthy family homes positioned on higher ground while ordinary people's houses sit lower down the hillside. Walking through the streets reveals how the community was organized and what life was like for different groups.
The village is best explored on foot, with walkways and natural paths connecting the houses throughout the site. Visit during milder seasons when the weather is comfortable and the terrain is easy to navigate.
Local residents still prepare rice cakes using traditional methods, striking the dough with wooden mallets exactly as done for hundreds of years. This craft is rarely seen elsewhere and demonstrates how ancient techniques have been passed down through generations.
