Hwangnyeongsan Fire Signaling Mound, Historic fire signal site and scenic viewpoint in Jeonpo 1-dong, Busan, South Korea

The Hwangnyeongsan Fire Signaling Mound is a restored stone structure sitting at the top of Hwangnyeongsan, one of Busan's central mountains, in the district of Jeonpo 1-dong. From this elevated position, the site opens onto a wide view of the city, the coastline, and the surrounding hills.

The signaling system on Hwangnyeongsan dates back to the period of the Three Kingdoms, over a thousand years ago, and was part of a nationwide defense network. It remained in active use through the Joseon period, including during Japanese invasions, when rapid communication across the region was essential.

The fire signaling system used here was divided into smoke by day and fire by night, with the number of signals indicating how serious a threat was. This makes the site a concrete and readable trace of how communities organized their defense long before modern communication existed.

The trail leading to the summit is well marked and manageable for most ages, with a mostly gentle slope. Early morning or late afternoon are good times to visit, as the light is softer and the view over the city tends to be clearer.

The restored structure on site is paired with information panels that explain exactly how the signaling system worked, including what each number of fires or smoke plumes meant for those watching from a distance. This means a visit here is not only about the view but also about reading a working communication system that once covered the entire country.
