Dobbins Lookout is a high overlook inside South Mountain Park, where a stone shelter sits on a hillside above the desert. From the railing, you look down over Phoenix, its downtown towers, and the open valley stretching toward distant ridges.
The overlook’s shelter was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps as part of public works during the Great Depression. South Mountain Park itself began in 1924, and this spot became a gathering place as the city below grew wider.
The stone shelter from the 1930s gives the place a simple, old-fashioned feel, and a panel behind it points out landmarks across Phoenix. People come here for proposals and photos, using the high view as a backdrop for moments they want to remember.
You can drive up on a paved road or walk along the Holbert Trail, which takes effort but rewards you with the same view. Bring water and a layer for the breeze, and go in the cooler morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat.
