Veliuona manor
Veliuona manor is an early 19th-century classicist building with symmetrical design and simple lines, raised on a high platform. The main section features a portico with four Doric columns, and behind it sits a larger brick extension that adds depth to the structure.
The estate was first mentioned in the mid-16th century and belonged to various noble families, including Queen Bona Sforza. The current buildings date from the early 19th century under the Zaleski family, and the manor later served as a school for much of the 20th century.
The Zaleski family name remains tied to the estate's identity and legacy. The building later became a school where local children learned, making it a gathering place for the community across generations.
The estate sits in a quiet park with old trees and offers plenty of space for walking and exploring. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes as the grounds are extensive and paths may be uneven.
The celebrated Lithuanian writer Petras Cvirka attended a school that once occupied the manor building, connecting the site to the country's literary history. Additionally, Vladislovas Mykolas Zaleskis, who became a bishop, was born on the estate.
