Sukhothai Historical Park, Archaeological site in Sukhothai Province, Thailand.
Sukhothai Historical Park spans 70 square kilometers containing over 193 archaeological sites including ancient temples, royal palaces, stupas and Buddha statues that showcase the magnificence of the former Thai kingdom established in the 13th century.
Founded in the 13th century as the capital of the first independent Thai kingdom, Sukhothai was established by King Pho Khun Si Intharathit and flourished under King Ramkhamhaeng the Great who created the Thai alphabet and legal system.
The park preserves the distinctive Sukhothai art style characterized by lotus-bud shaped stupas, graceful Buddha statues with serene expressions, and architectural elements that harmoniously blend Khmer, Mon and Sinhalese influences into a uniquely Thai aesthetic.
Open daily from 06:30 to 19:30, the park charges entrance fees of 20 baht for Thais and 200 baht for foreigners per zone, offering bicycle rentals, guided tours and visitor centers with historical exhibits throughout the site.
This UNESCO World Heritage site since 1991 houses the famous Wat Mahathat temple where a Buddha head has become mysteriously entwined in the roots of a banyan tree, creating one of Thailand's most photographed and spiritually significant images.
