Place Aminadabu Birara, Commemorative plaque in the 18th arrondissement, Paris, France
Place Aminadabu Birara is a metal commemorative plaque in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, dedicated to a Tutsi resistance leader who fought during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. It stands in the Clignancourt neighborhood, mounted on a simple structure with a message honoring his name and story.
Paris officially named this site on November 19, 2021, in honor of Aminadabu Birara, born in 1926 and killed in 1994 during the genocide. The inauguration ceremony took place on May 13, 2022, organized by Ibuka France, a group that supports genocide survivors.
The memorial is in the Clignancourt neighborhood and easy to reach on foot from the surrounding streets. It is open at all times and requires no entry fee, making it simple to stop by during any visit to the area.
This site is the eleventh memorial in France dedicated to remembering the Rwanda genocide, and the third in Paris itself. Aminadabu Birara's son, Marcel Harérimana, traveled from Rwanda to attend the inauguration and said the plaque is a tool against the denial of history.
