Cascata Del Volturno
Cascata Del Volturno is a waterfall in Castel San Vincenzo, Molise, where water flows over moss-covered rocks and forms small natural pools. The site features multiple cascades surrounded by green vegetation, with a short walking trail descending from the parking area to the river.
The site has been linked to water usage since the 8th century when nearby monks built mills along the river. In the early 1800s, the Martino family expanded industrial operations with sawmills and workshops, which eventually closed when the river was redirected for hydroelectric power in the early 20th century.
The name Volturno comes from the ancient river and remains tied to this natural site. Today, visitors gather here to swim in natural pools, photograph the cascades, and relax on the rocks as part of a simple outdoor experience.
Visitors park for free near the entrance and pay a small fee of about two euros at the start of the trail. The area has restrooms, a small refreshment stand, and picnic tables, and wearing shoes with good grip is advised since the path is uneven and sometimes slippery.
The river is one of the sources of the Volturno, one of the major rivers in southern Italy, with its origin just a few kilometers away. The water here is notably cold and clear, allowing visitors to wade between the pools and explore the cascades from different perspectives.
