Fujikyu 2000 series, Japanese electric multiple unit train type
The Fujikyu 2000 series was a train that operated from 2001 to 2016 on the Fujikyuko Line between Otsuki and Kawaguchiko, carrying travelers through the mountainous landscape near Mount Fuji. Each train set comprised three cars with large windows and observation areas that allowed passengers to comfortably view the passing scenery.
The train entered service in 2001 after Fujikyu acquired two sets from JR East, which previously operated as the Panorama Express Alps. After approximately 15 years of operation, the line was retired in 2016 and replaced by newer train models from the 8500 series.
The name refers to the year when the train entered service, marking a modern phase in regional tourism. The colorful exterior painted with Mount Fuji motifs and friendly characters reflected the vibrant local culture and made the train a recognizable symbol for visitors heading to the mountain and surrounding lakes.
The train was equipped with large windows and observation areas ideal for viewing the mountain landscape during the journey. The route connecting the two cities was approximately 26 kilometers long and offered regular connections for visitors wanting to explore the natural beauty of the region.
One original car, numbered 2001, was preserved next to Shimoyoshida Station after retirement and now serves as a reminder of the train's history. Another car was repainted to its original JR East livery in 2013 as a tribute before retirement.
