Arakurayama Sengen Park, Buddhist park in Fujiyoshida, Japan
Arakurayama Sengen Park is a park in Fujiyoshida, Japan, located on the slopes of Mount Arakura with a five-story tower standing before Fuji. More than 600 cherry trees grow along the paths and on the upper levels, where an observation point opens the view across the surroundings.
The pagoda in the park was built in 1959 to honor soldiers who died in wars between 1868 and 1945. The site connects memory with the natural landscape and became a widely photographed landmark of the region.
The site brings together Buddhist architecture and natural landscape, showing how sacred places in Japan blend into mountain surroundings. Visitors often come during spring cherry bloom or autumn foliage, when colors gather around the pagoda.
The main observation point sits at a height reached by 398 steps, so plan some time and stamina for the climb. Parking is available free of charge, and visiting is best in the morning during clear weather when Fuji is most visible.
The pagoda receives lighting during certain seasons until 22:00 and then stands dark against the mountain. Photographers often wait until dusk to capture the interplay of light, tower, and mountain silhouette.
