Yamanashi Prefectural Fujisan World Heritage Center, Visitor center in Fujikawaguchiko, Japan
The Yamanashi Prefectural Fujisan World Heritage Center is split into two halls with interactive displays explaining Mount Fuji and featuring a large paper model. The exhibits cover the mountain's geology, its place in Japanese history, and its importance to pilgrims over time.
The center opened in 2016 and documents centuries of pilgrimages to the mountain. These journeys were a major part of Japanese tradition and show how the peak held spiritual importance for generations of visitors seeking to reach its summit.
The South Hall displays traditional artwork, including woodblock prints by various artists showing the mountain across different centuries. This collection reflects how people in Japan captured the sacred peak through their artistic expressions.
The center sits near Lake Kawaguchi and can be reached by bus from the train station or on foot. Wear comfortable shoes if you plan to walk the marked trails in the area, and allow enough time to explore both halls at your own pace.
The center features a large model built from washi paper that visitors can explore with augmented reality handsets. This craft technique creates an unusual way to experience the mountain's details and landscape from a different perspective.
