La Combe de Vaumale
La Combe de Vaumale is a hiking area near the village of Joucas, characterized by gentle slopes, exposed cliff faces, and heavily forested sections. The trail shifts between shaded woodland, open fields with views toward Provence, and steep passages secured with cables and metal ladders.
The area was settled over centuries by people who harnessed river water to power mills. Numerous mill ruins scattered through the valley date back to times when water was essential to the local economy.
The valley reflects centuries of agricultural tradition, with old stone walls and ruins of mills dotting the landscape. Local farmers shaped this terrain through generations of work with grapevines and olive groves.
The area is well marked with white and red blazes and requires sturdy footwear, especially in wet conditions. Bring plenty of water and start early to enjoy cooler hours and sufficient daylight.
The valley contains ruins of the Moulin Jean de Marre, an old water mill tucked between rocky gorges, showing visitors how ingenuity and water once worked together. These remains tell quiet stories of a craft nearly lost to time.
