Château de Murs

Chateau de Murs is a fortified manor in southern France that combines architectural features from different centuries into a single ensemble. The structure displays Gothic windows, an old well, and a monumental gate bearing heraldic crests that define its character.

Construction of the fortress began in the 12th century when the Agoult family built it as a fortified barracks to house soldiers. Over the following centuries, additional structures were added, gradually transforming it from a purely military installation into a noble residence.

The chapel served as both a place of worship for the noble family and the village community, showing how faith connected different social classes under one roof. You can still feel this shared use today through the modest but dignified decorations inside.

The castle is privately owned by descendants of the Vayson de Pradenne family and visitors need to arrange access in advance. Contact ahead to schedule a guided tour so you can see the interior and grounds properly.

The southern section contains 18th-century gardens and pavilions designed by Jean-Baptiste François d'Astouaud, adding an elegant layer to the fortress. This refined garden design shows how the site was later adapted as a place for leisure and enjoyment.
