USS Growler, Museum ship and submarine in Manhattan, New York, United States
The USS Growler is a Grayback-class submarine measuring approximately 317 feet (96.6 meters) in length, designed to carry Regulus cruise missiles with nuclear warheads during Cold War operations.
Commissioned in August 1958 and operated until May 1964, the submarine conducted strategic deterrent patrols off the Pacific coast targeting Soviet naval bases during Cold War tensions.
As the only preserved nuclear missile submarine accessible to the public in the United States, the vessel offers educational exhibits about submarine warfare and Cold War naval strategy.
The submarine is moored at Pier 86 in Manhattan as part of the Intrepid Museum collection, where visitors can tour the control room, missile hangars, and torpedo tubes.
The vessel features two preserved missile hangars that once housed Regulus I cruise missiles, representing early nuclear deterrence technology developed for submarine deployment during the Cold War era.
