Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum sits at Pier 86 on the Hudson River and uses a decommissioned aircraft carrier as its main exhibition floor. Fighter jets, helicopters, a spacecraft, and a submarine stand ready for visitors to explore on board and on the pier alongside.

The carrier launched in 1943 and served in the Pacific, where it was hit multiple times and later recovered space capsules from the ocean. After leaving service, it was brought to Manhattan in 1982 and opened the collection to visitors.

The name comes from the Latin word for fearless and honors the crew who steered the ship through heavy combat. Visitors today see cockpits, hangars, and work spaces that show how hundreds of people lived and served in close quarters.

The site opens daily at 10 in the morning and closes at 5 in the afternoon, with all main areas wheelchair accessible. Guided tours for school classes and other groups can be booked in advance.

On the flight deck stands Enterprise, the first NASA space shuttle that never flew into space but served for tests during the construction of the Space Shuttle program. Below deck lies Growler, one of the few preserved submarines with nuclear missiles that visitors can walk through inside.
