USS Intrepid, Aircraft carrier museum at Pier 86, Manhattan, United States.
The USS Intrepid is a 266-meter-long aircraft carrier moored at Pier 86 on the Hudson River in Manhattan. Its flight deck displays fighter jets, helicopters, and the Space Shuttle Enterprise, while lower levels contain crew quarters and engineering spaces.
The carrier launched in 1943 and saw combat in the Pacific during World War II, where it survived multiple attacks. After serving in Cold War operations and recovering space capsules, it was decommissioned in 1974.
The name Intrepid means fearless, marking the ship as one of many carriers built rapidly to meet wartime needs. Today it serves as a classroom where students come aboard to learn about engineering and naval operations through hands-on exhibits.
Visitors can explore four decks including the hangar deck with exhibits and the restored flight deck. Steep stairs and narrow passageways require sturdy footwear and caution when moving between levels.
The ship houses a real submarine named Growler that visitors can board. The cramped spaces show how crews lived and worked for months underwater.
