Ferata Hvadnik, Via ferrata in Gozd Martuljek near Kranjska Gora, Slovenia

The route follows a narrow gorge along the Hvadnik stream for about 0.5 miles (800 meters), climbing roughly 820 feet (250 meters) through steep rock faces, overhangs, and boulder sections secured with steel cables and iron rungs.

The via ferrata was established to provide recreational climbers with safe access to the rugged terrain of the Martuljek gorge, and it has been maintained through funding from bracelet sales and donations to support ongoing safety upgrades and equipment maintenance.

The climbing route reflects the Slovenian tradition of mountain sports and outdoor adventure, with locals promoting environmentally responsible tourism and respect for natural landscapes through organized climbing activities and guided experiences in the Julian Alps region.

The route is closed from October 31 to April 1 due to snow and ice, requires helmets and harnesses for safety, and begins near a parking lot at the sports playground in Gozd Martuljek with a 15-minute approach walk to the starting point.

Climbers cross the stream multiple times on suspension bridges while navigating the shaded gorge, which provides relief from summer heat and offers close-up views of limestone formations and mineral deposits alongside waterfalls and cascading water throughout the ascent.

Via ferrata in Europe: Dolomites, Alps, climbing routes

Via ferrata routes in the Alps combine steel cables, metal rungs, and bridges into protected climbing paths through alpine rock faces. The routes extend through the Dolomites, French Alps, Austrian Ötztal, and Swiss mountain regions between 2,600 and 9,800 feet in elevation. Routes such as the Ivano Dibona or Cresta Ovest della Marmolada follow former military paths from World War I. Routes like the Via Ferrata de la Cascade in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes run alongside waterfalls and gorges. In the Salzkammergut and Grisons regions, routes such as Postalm and Schwarzhorn access summits and mountain lakes. The Spanish Voie Olmo near Alicante offers Mediterranean climbing sections in limestone cliffs. Technical sections with overhangs and traverses alternate with secured walking passages. Most via ferrata require climbing harnesses and appropriate equipment.
