Al Noor island
Al Noor Island is a small landmass on Khalid Lagoon in Sharjah, connected to the mainland by a short bridge behind the mosque at Al Majaz waterfront. The island extends through garden paths between woods and grasslands, with several art installations, a butterfly house holding over 500 specimens of different species, and a literature pavilion with colored cushions and calligraphy.
The island was officially opened in 2015 to create a space where art and nature connect. Over the years, it became a venue for the International Storytelling Festival and other cultural events that celebrate traditional storytelling and modern artistic expression.
The island's name means light and reflects the evening light shows that glow among plants and sculptures. Locals use this space for walks after sunset and sit by the lagoon to watch the illuminated skyline of Sharjah over the water.
Reach the island via Buhairah Corniche Road and walk across the bridge behind the mosque at Al Majaz waterfront. The butterfly house is most active early in the morning when butterflies fly through the humid space.
One installation shows over 1000 glowing flowers that change color after dark and appear like a living carpet of light. The butterfly house includes species such as emerald swallowtails and pink roses that visitors can watch fly up close.
