ETH Zürich, Zentrum
ETH Zurich Zentrum is the main technical and scientific campus in the heart of Zurich, made up of several buildings including a historic main structure with a large dome and neoclassical columns. The layout combines older buildings from the nineteenth century with newer structures, featuring wide courtyards and open corridors that shape the character of the campus.
The institution was founded in 1854 by the Swiss government to promote technical education, beginning with six faculties such as architecture, mechanical engineering, and chemistry. Over the decades, it grew by adding more disciplines and evolved into a globally recognized center for science and technology.
The main building at the heart of campus is known locally as HG and serves as a meeting point for students and faculty throughout the day. The nearby Polyterrasse is often used as a resting spot after classes, offering a wide view over Zurich.
The main building is open to the public from early morning until late evening, allowing free exploration of its halls and rooms. The Polybahn, a small funicular railway, connects the main station with the campus in just a few minutes, offering an easy way to get there.
Every year, the main building hosts the Polyball, a large dance event with a long tradition since the 1880s that draws students and guests from all over the city. The event is considered one of the largest decorated balls in Europe, transforming the rooms into a festive setting.
