City Center

The city center of Nowy Sącz features a compact layout with historic buildings, narrow streets, and a bustling main square surrounded by colorful houses and small shops. The Dunajec River flows nearby while castle ruins on a nearby hill overlook the town from above.

The city was founded in the 14th century and became an important trading hub under King Casimir the Great. A castle overlooking the town was damaged by Swedish forces in the 17th century, leaving behind only partial walls and a tower today.

The center reflects a rich mix of Jewish and Christian heritage visible in old synagogues, churches, and cemeteries throughout the streets. Local residents maintain traditional crafts and customs that you can see in cafes and during seasonal festivals.

The center is small enough to explore on foot with decent walkways and level ground in most areas. Comfortable shoes are recommended since some streets are cobblestone, and spring or autumn offer the most pleasant weather for a visit.

Beneath the old market square lies a hidden cellar that local legend claims holds ancient coins and stories from centuries past. While visitors cannot enter this secret space today, local guides enjoy sharing the fascinating stories behind this underground mystery.
