Lorica and Arvo Lake
Arvo Lake sits in the Sila region at about 4,200 feet (1,280 meters) elevation and is an artificial lake stretching nearly 5.5 miles (9 kilometers) long. It is surrounded by tall mountains and pine forests with a calm water surface that mirrors the sky.
The lake was created between 1927 and 1931 by building an earthen dam to hold back the Arvo River. The roughly 70-foot (22-meter) dam was officially opened in 1932 and was built to provide power and water to the region.
Lorica is a small mountain town known to visitors for outdoor activities. In winter people come to ski, while in summer they use the lake and surrounding woods for hiking and enjoying time in nature.
The lake is best reached by renting a car since public transport is limited and it sits about 47 miles (75 kilometers) from the nearest airports. Visitors can boat, bike, fish, or walk along the shores, with picnic spots and cafes available near Lorica.
The lake hosts various bird species including fishing eagles and herons that can be seen year-round or during migration seasons. The waters are also known for fishing and contain trout, perch and other fish species, making it a versatile destination.
