Mountain Refuge Monte Lussari
The Mountain Refuge Monte Lussari is a mountain hut in Italy near Tarvisio, located at 1790 meters in elevation and offering accommodation and meals for hikers. The simple building has about 30 beds and basic facilities including showers and toilets for travelers on mountain trails.
The refuge sits near the Sanctuary of Mariano Lussari, named after a statue of the Virgin Mary that legend says appeared on the mountain in the 14th century. The sanctuary itself was rebuilt multiple times in the 16th and 17th centuries after lightning strikes and warfare, and underwent restoration in 2000.
The site is deeply connected to a local legend about a statue of the Virgin Mary that appeared here in the 14th century, bringing the community together. Visitors today experience this history through the small chapels along the trail and the sanctuary, which serves as a symbol of peace and unity for the region.
The easiest way to reach the refuge is by cable car from Camporosso, which takes about 15 minutes, or you can hike the Sentiero del Pellegrino trail, which takes around 2 to 3 hours. A free parking lot is located at the cable car base station, with both access routes easily reachable from there.
A notable feature is the proximity to the Via Crucis, a series of stations along the hiking trail designed by a Slovenian artist that connects visitors to the spiritual meaning of the place. This religious art installation makes the journey meaningful beyond just the physical challenge of the climb.
