Lago di Barcis / Lât di Barcis
Lago di Barcis is an artificial lake in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, nestled in a valley surrounded by wooded hills. The water is calm and blue, bordered by walking paths and open grassy areas where visitors can fish, swim, or take small boats out on the water.
The lake was created in the early 20th century when a dam was built on the Torne River to prevent flooding and store water for farming. This transformation of a small valley floor into a large lake was an important project that supported agriculture and the region's development.
The lake is connected to local fishing and farming traditions that still shape how people live in the area. Small villages nearby preserve old ways of building and working the land, reflecting a long history of living with water and nature.
Visitors will find parking spots near the lake and well-maintained paths for walking and cycling. The best time to visit is in the warmer months when swimming, fishing, or simply relaxing by the water are more enjoyable.
The water changes color depending on the time of day and weather, sometimes appearing intensely turquoise and other times deep blue. Local stories tell of travelers who once found peace here after tiring walks in the hills, and the place still holds that quality of inviting visitors to slow down.
