Santuario Madonna del Lussari / Cerkev Višarske Kraljice
The Santuario Madonna del Lussari is a small church perched on Monte Lussari mountain near Tarvisio, with bright colors and simple architecture visible from the surrounding valleys. Inside, a wooden Gothic statue of the Madonna takes the central place, while painted stations of the cross and religious artwork decorate the interior walls.
The sanctuary was built around 1360 following a shepherd's discovery of a Madonna statue on the mountain, an event interpreted as a miracle. The structure was damaged by lightning and wars but rebuilt over the centuries while maintaining its original form.
The sanctuary is dedicated to the Madonna, and locals have walked here for centuries to mark special religious days and family occasions. Visitors commonly light candles or leave flowers as gestures of devotion and gratitude.
The path up starts from a nearby village and involves a moderately steep walk that requires comfortable shoes, though it does not take long to reach the summit. The church is open most days for visitors and draws more people during warmer months.
Local legend tells of a shepherd whose sheep disappeared during prayer at the site and were later found kneeling near the Madonna statue. This story has been passed down through generations and shaped the spiritual significance people attribute to the location.
