Plaza Mayor
Plaza Mayor in Garrovillas de Alconétar is a large irregular square surrounded by historic stone buildings and covering several thousand square meters. Five streets lead into it, some still featuring stone arches at their entrances that once held gates for protection or events.
Built in the late medieval period in Gothic style, the square connected two neighborhoods around the churches of San Pedro and Santa Maria. A significant event was an earthquake in the 1700s that tilted some pillars, leaving marks that remain visible today.
The square reflects traditional rural medieval design with arcades and stone arches that have sheltered community gatherings for centuries. Local people still use it for markets, celebrations, and daily meetings, keeping it alive as a place where townspeople come together.
The square is easily accessible on foot from most parts of town and located near main streets and local shops. Visitors can sit down and explore at their own pace, while the place gradually becomes busier as the day progresses with locals appearing.
The square has been used in several film productions because its Gothic architecture and age attract filmmakers looking to shoot historical scenes. This film use has brought attention to the place, yet it remains an authentic gathering spot for the local community.
